Go-to Fast Food: Gluten Free

All fast food chains pretty much consist of everything we gluten free eaters can’t eat like buns, chicken tenders, onion rings, pizza,  etc … so this often poses a problem if we are wanting something quick or on the go. The top fast food chains such as McDonalds, Taco Bell, Wendy’s, Burger King and Subway provide pretty much no gluten free options. Even if they do claim to have gluten free items, 95% of the time these items are cross contaminated. So, WHAT DO WE DO!?!?! No worries my friends, I will provide you a list of my go-to, reliable and favorite gluten free fast food chains along with orders that are 100% gluten free. Below each section will also have a link for you to further explore each place’s gluten free menu.

Chick-fil-a

Chick-fil-a is one of my favorite fast food chains because their french fries are always gluten free, and I looooove french fries! Along with the french fries, I usually get their grilled chicken nuggets (covered in chick-fil-a sauce) or their grilled chicken club sandwich with a gluten free bun. Their GF bun is definitely not the best I have ever tasted, but it does the trick if you are really craving a chicken sandwich. Other than that, their options are not very extensive.

Chipotle

Chipotle definitely has the largest gluten free menu. All items on their menu are gluten free except the tortillas. While they do have corn tortillas, you have to be careful about cross contamination since all tortillas are put in the same presser. Their burrito bowls with a side of chips are always a great choice and will leave you full and satisfied. There are so many choices!

Culver’s

Culver’s definitely does not have a friendly gluten free menu, but they have delicious gluten free buns for the burgers. I will usually order a butter burger with everything on it (lettuce, tomato, pickles, onions, ketchup, mayonnaise, mustard) on a gluten free bun. Unfortunately, the fries are not 100% gluten free since they are in the same fryer with gluten containing items, and trust me on this one because I have gotten sick many times. Other than that, their salads are gluten free and a lot of their ice cream toppings are gluten free. But their burger and custard always do the trick for me!

Five Guys

Five Guys is another great place for those craving a good burger and fries. While they do not have gluten free buns, their burgers wrapped in lettuce are still delicious. But the star of the show is their french fries! The fries are cooked in their very own fryer, so there is 0 chance of cross contamination. I order the “All the Way” (mayonnaise, lettuce, dill pickle, tomato, ketchup, mustard, grilled onion, grilled mushroom) cheese burger wrapped in lettuce with a big side of fries. If you let the person who is taking your order know that you cannot have gluten, they will usually make sure that those preparing your food are being extra cautious.

Jersey Mike’s

Jersey Mike’s is another great sandwich place for gluten free eaters because they do offer gluten free bread. Another positive about Jersey Mike’s is when you tell them you are gluten free, they will change their gloves and clean off the equipment before making your sandwich. I usually get the “California Chicken Cheese Steak” (chicken, white american cheese, red & green peppers, onions and chipotle mayonnaise) on gluten free bread. This is a hot sandwich, but they also have cold ones as well. There’s many great sandwich options to choose from.

Jimmy John’s

Jimmy John’s is a great place to get a good sandwich and chips that are gluten free. They don’t provide GF bread, but they have something called an “unwich” (wrapped in lettuce). I know that when things are wrapped in lettuce it doesn’t always give you that full taste, but Jimmy John’s does a good job to where it feels like a normal sandwich. I am a sucker for avocado, so I normally order the “#12 Beach Club” (turkey, provolone cheese, avocado, cucumber, lettuce, tomato and mayo) with regular chips. A large majority of their toppings are naturally GF though so the possibilities are endless and all of their chips are GF as well.

Panera Bread

Panera Bread is my go-to if I want to eat a little healthier and lighter. They don’t have any gluten free sandwich options, but they make up for it with delicious gluten free grain bowls, salads and soups. I absolutely love their “Fuji Apple Chicken Salad” (lettuce, apple chips, chicken, gorgonzola cheese, red onion, tomato, pecans and fuji apple dress) and “Green Goddess Cobb Salad” (lettuce, chicken, tomato, pickled red onion, avocado, bacon, hard boiled egg and green goddess dressing). I also am obsessed with their “Autumn Squash” and “Baked Potato” soups, which can be found at grocery stores as well.

Overall, when you go anywhere to eat gluten free, don’t be afraid to ask questions. Each location might handle gluten free differently, so our experiences may be positive while some may be negative. If you have any other fast food chains that provide delicious gluten free options, share them out!
